New Jersey State AFL-CIO Announces 30th Annual “Joseph V. Egan” Labor Candidates School

The New Jersey State AFL-CIO is proud to host the 30th Annual “Joseph V. Egan” Labor Candidates School, continuing a long-standing tradition of empowering union members to step forward and lead in the political arena. For nearly three decades, the program has recruited, trained, mentored, and supported rank-and-file union members running for public office, helping achieve more than 1,300 election victories and ensuring working families have a strong voice at every level of government.
The Labor Candidates School serves as the cornerstone of this effort, equipping union members with the tools and knowledge needed to run successful campaigns. Participants will receive instruction from experienced election professionals on topics including fundraising, election law, campaign planning, message development, public speaking, media relations, voter outreach, volunteer recruitment, targeting strategies, digital campaigning, and modern get-out-the-vote techniques.
The 2026 Labor Candidates School will take place August 8–9, 2026, with the location to be announced.
Union members interested in seeking elected office must first secure the support of their local union’s presiding officer, who will notify the Central Labor Council and the New Jersey State AFL-CIO in writing. All candidates are reviewed by their local Central Labor Council, and first-time candidates are required to complete the Labor Candidates School as part of the process.
